Online Gaming as a Key Growth Driver
The latest data from the American Gaming Association (AGA) highlights record-breaking growth in the gaming industry, driven by the rapid expansion of online gaming and shifting player demographics. This momentum is expected to fuel continued progress into 2025.
The AGA projects that US commercial gaming revenue will exceed $67 billion in 2024, continuing a remarkable four-year streak of consistent growth.
As of September, the industry generated $53.24 billion in revenue, an 8% increase compared to the same period last year.
In Q3 2024 alone, commercial gaming revenue reached an all-time high of $17.71 billion for the third quarter.
The online gaming sector has emerged as the primary source of revenue growth:
- iGaming revenue surged by 30.3% to $2.08 billion.
- Sports betting revenue grew by 42.4%, reaching $3.24 billion.
Collectively, online gaming channels accounted for 29% of the industry’s total revenue.
Stability in Brick-and-Mortar Casinos
While traditional brick-and-mortar casinos saw a slight 0.9% decline, they still generated $12.38 billion in Q3 2024. Stability in this segment was supported by new casino openings and consistent player demand, despite broader economic challenges.
Demographic Shifts and Industry Outlook
AGA President and CEO Bill Miller highlighted a significant demographic shift: the average age of casino visitors has dropped from 50 to 42 years. According to Miller, this reflects the industry’s ability to adapt and attract younger generations of players.
“Looking ahead to 2025, I see enormous potential for further growth in our industry,” Miller stated.
The AGA also plans to launch a new responsible gaming campaign in 2025, aimed at fostering sustainable growth and enhancing consumer protection. Miller noted strong bipartisan support for the gaming industry, citing polls that show 70% of voters approve of its operations.
Combating Illegal Gaming
The AGA continues to prioritize regulatory issues, including cracking down on illegal operators. Miller pointed to a recent legal victory in Virginia against unlicensed gaming machines as evidence of the industry’s commitment to compliance and fair play.
Economic Contributions
In Q3 2024, gaming tax revenue reached $3.79 billion, an 8.9% increase from the previous year. This underscores the gaming industry’s vital role in supporting state and local budgets.
As the industry progresses into 2025, the AGA’s focus on innovation, responsible gaming, and regulatory enforcement sets a strong foundation for sustained success.
